Q: Do the different shapes have different weights? I'm interested in using them for a measuring activity?

I haven't used a weight criteria to sort the items.....I would guess differences in weight, if any, would be only be very slight.

Q: How heavy are these - would they be suitable for taking on a plane to entertain the kids?

The whole set of 72 weighs 70 grams. If you took some of these on a plane there shouldn't be any issue as this would easily fit into their backpacks.
