The Aztec Emperor, Montezuma, was said to be drinking an elixir for longevity made from cacao, vanilla and honey when the conquistadors were ushered in for an audience. Though vanilla is now grown in diverse tropical parts of the world, only in Central America lives the “stingless” bee that naturally pollinates the flowers to grow these fragrant, unparalleled beans that have become the world’s favorite flavor. This may seem like trivia, but do you know that each vanilla bean has to be handled hundreds of times during the 6 month curing process?
