Starrett Pin Vices
Typical Starrett build quality and functionality. All of these pin vices work well and I would recommend.

Starrett Quality
After several years of using cheaper pin vise products I finally decided to replace them with these Starretts. I work on guitars and other stringed instruments and I use pin vises allot for hand drilling and starting small screw holes. Recently I started to work on a mandolin for a client and I experienced an epic failure of the pin vise I was using. The bit kept slipping and the threads in the collet stripped out as I was trying to tighten it. I went straight to my computer and ordered this set of Starrett vises. I am a stickler for buying quality tools and as I was ordering these I knew I should have bought these to begin with. Yes these are a bit pricey but once you put them to use and you feel that precise quality of a well engineered and dependable tool in your hands, there is no better feeling than knowing your work reflects that. If you are in need of these do yourself a favor and make the investment. These are the best!

Stepped-up to Starrett quality
This replaces a cheapy pin vise that sorta' worked. I guess I had to go the cheap route and let if fail before I could justify the purchase of a Starrett. I wish I had done so years ago! The fit and finish is great. The rotation of the collar as it tightens around the collet is smooth. The collet jaws meet dead-center, which keeps the drill bit running true. The knurls are deep and provide plenty of "traction", even if my hands are a bit greasy. The octagonal handle keeps it from rolling off the benchtop, but still allows it to rotate freely between my fingers. The only reason I would need to replace this is if I lose it. It will last a lifetime. It "feels right". It is substantial enough to have the weight to feed the drill bit without the need to put lots of pressure on the bit. It feels like a quality tool, and small enough to be maneuverable and get the job done. Always willing to support a company that is still manufacturing in the US. (Keep the money on this side of the ocean!) It is a PLEASURE to use, which always makes the project more fun. :-DThe sooner you get it, the sooner you can enjoy using it.

The last bodkin I will ever have to buy.
The media could not be loaded. I am very picky as to the bodkin I like to use. I have gone so far as making my own boring holes into the end of chopsticks to hold a blowgun dart. This Starrett pin vise is perfect for holding the shaft of a blowgun dart. I always have a very sharp bodkin that is light to the hand and very easy to manipulate as I tie flies for fly fishing. It is made of steel making it readily available from a magnet next to my vise.I can also change the length of the bodkin when I need to heat up the end of the bodkin with an alcohol lamp.

Starrett should be ashamed to sell this product
Like many others, I have used Starrett products my entire career (35 years) with great satisfaction. I had an old Starrett pin vise that I loved and wanted a set of all four sizes. I was willing to pay four times the competitor's price to support this fine old American manufacturing company. Tragically, the product arrived with one of the collets broken and the fit and finish were garbage: crude, rough threads on the collet nuts and rough finish on the barrels. Wise up, Starrett, or give up; your choice! Either reestablish your quality to your old standards or quit selling junk!
